Informational meeting to discuss St. Thomas doctoral program in leadership

An informational meeting about the doctorate of education program in leadership at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., will be held from 4-6 p.m. Monday, Feb 7, in Room 119A of the Nursing Building at UW-Eau Claire. The meeting is open to all interested members of the campus community and the general public.

Several University of St. Thomas alumni who currently work at UW-Eau Claire will host and facilitate the meeting. The University of St. Thomas doctorate of education program in leadership is one of the few live (versus online) doctoral programs that can be completed while working full time, said Dr. William Miller, UW-Eau Claire assistant professor of accounting and a graduate of the St. Thomas program.

Interviews set for director of CETL candidates

On-campus interviews will begin during the week of Jan. 31 with two candidates for the position of director of UW-Eau Claire's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Faculty/Staff Appreciation passes available for Blugold athletics events

As a thank you to the many faculty and staff who have directly or indirectly supported UW-Eau Claire's 580 student-athletes and athletics program, the UW-Eau Claire Student Affairs division announces the availability of complimentary Faculty/Staff Appreciation passes, good for two-person admissions to four Blugold athletics home competitions during the 2010-11 academic year. The passes provide general admission seating for regular season games only. (Per NCAA/WIAC policies, complimentary admission is not allowed for post-season play.)

The passes are good for sporting events for which admission fees are charged: football, women's volleyball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's basketball, gymnastics, mens and women's swimming and diving, and wrestling. Faculty/Staff Appreciation passes are available at the Service Center in the east lobby of Davies Center. Dec. 27 is UW-Eau Claire common furlough day

The UW-Eau Claire campus will be closed Monday, Dec. 27, the third of four common furlough days for all UW-Eau Claire employees during the 2010-11 fiscal year. Full-time, 12-month employees must take a total of 16 furlough days during the two-year period beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 30, 2011. Employees who work less than full time will prorate their furlough days accordingly. The furlough days were mandated for all state and UW System employees by Gov. Jim Doyle in response to a projected state budget shortfall. The fourth common furlough day for 2010-11 will be Friday, March 25, 2011. New student payroll system to be implemented

During the spring 2011 semester all UW System campuses will implement a new human resources system that will be released in three phases. The first release will allow human resources to submit student time sheets electronically. With this new system, two supervisors per department will be authorized to electronically sign student time sheets. Supervisors are asked to submit new eligibility forms for spring semester to Human Resources, limiting the number of supervisors to two. Human Resources also asks that supervisors review the student eligibility documentation that will continue into spring semester and submit changes on the Student Payroll Supervisor spreadsheet by e-mail to persnl52@uwec.edu. Classified Staff Professional Development Day set for January

Call for student nominations: Provost's Honors Symposium

The inaugural Provost's Honors Symposium for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity, to be held from 1-5:30 p.m. May 6, 2011, in Schneider Hall, will give selected students from across the university a venue in which to present their significant research, scholarship and creative projects to the university community.

Departments and faculty members are invited to complete the nomination form to recommend top-notch projects by student researchers and scholars, and/or creative activity. The nomination deadline is Feb. 18, 2011.

The University Honors Council, in consultation with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and with nominating faculty and departments, will serve as the selection committee. Final selections will be made by March 4. Call for student nominations: 2011 women's studies awards

Since 1982 UW-Eau Claire's women's studies program has recognized exemplary student projects and research nominated by faculty mentors. Emphasizing the contributions and roles of women, these works demonstrate the importance of creative
student-faculty collaboration. In addition to originality, timeliness and contributions to the field, award criteria include emphasis on women and the potential impact of the project. Papers and projects in fulfillment of class requirements during the sessions of spring, summer or fall 2010 are eligible for nomination. Students do not need to be enrolled during the fall 2010 or spring 2011 semesters to be eligible. Information about entry categories and awards is available online. CSD series continues

The UW-Eau Claire communication sciences and disorders department once again is hosting a series of professional seminars throughout the academic year. Faculty, staff invited to participate in WHE gift project

For the past 18 years Women in Higher Education has sponsored the Holiday Gift Program, which assists UW-Eau Claire's low-income, nontraditional-age and traditional-age students with families. Last year's project reached 103 children, representing 47 families. In addition, $665 in cash was collected for grocery gift certificates.

WHE recently sent a mailing to nontraditional-age students inviting them to place their names on a gift "wish" list. The project also is open to traditional-age students who are parents, so WHE welcomes assistance in obtaining names of such students. Students who respond are asked to provide the ages of their children and their choice of gifts (a toy, article of clothing, up to $20 per person.)

Institute on Race and Ethnicity announces grant opportunity

The UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity announces the availability of grant funds for campus reading seminars. Campus reading seminar grants support reading groups and scholarly exchanges on subjects dealing with race, ethnicity, diversity, equity and inclusivity by making funds available for the purchase of books that focus on such themes. Participants in campus reading seminars may include faculty members, academic and classified staff, students and community members. A faculty or academic staff member must submit the proposal. The interdisciplinary composition and diversity of the participants foster intracampus and cross-disciplinary exchanges, stimulate curricular and pedagogical innovations, and encourage campus-community interactions.

Academic Affairs seeks faculty research fellow

Academic Affairs announces the creation of a faculty research fellow position to support liberal education curriculum reform at UW-Eau Claire. The faculty research fellow will work with Academic Affairs beginning Jan. 2, 2011, to conduct research to support the development, implementation and evaluation of liberal education curriculum reform. Results of this research will help inform decisions regarding implementation of integrated teaching/learning models. The position description provides more complete information. New Children's Center plans to be presented

Plans for the proposed new UW-Eau Claire Children’s Center will be presented to students, faculty and staff at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Wisconsin Room of Davies Center. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Meeting to discuss proposed new Children's Center project environmental impact

A public meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Wisconsin Room, Davies Center, regarding the draft environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the proposed new Children's Center project on the UW-Eau Claire campus. Parking will be available free of charge in the nonmetered portions of the Phillips lot directly south of Davies Center.

A description of the project and findings of the EIA will be presented, and all persons will be afforded a reasonable opportunity to identify both orally and in writing any support, issues or concerns they believe should be addressed during the EIA process for this proposed project.

The project manager is the state Department of Administration’s Division of State Facilities. Ayres Associates was retained by the DSF to prepare an EIA on behalf of the UW System.

Beginning Oct. 12, 2010, the draft EIA document will be available for download from the project website, http://www.ayresprojectinfo.com/UWEC-NewChildrensCenter-EIA.

Comments and inquiries raised during the draft EIA comment period will be used to develop the final EIA. Those who are interested in this project or who have any information relevant to it are welcome to offer comments, suggestions or other input. Those interested may attend the public meeting to present oral comments or submit written comments no later than Oct, 26, 2010, to:

SHOW research team to visit Eau Claire

A research team from the UW School of Medicine and Public Health involved with the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin will be working in Eau Claire in October. SHOW is an ongoing statewide public health research project designed to measure the health of Wisconsin residents. Researchers from SHOW will visit 1,000 households around the state each year to recruit adults; 28 households in Eau Claire will be invited to participate. 'Authors Celebration' set for Oct. 6

UW-Eau Claire will recognize the hard work and self-discipline it takes for university faculty and staff to bring scholarly work to the level of publication or performance with an "Authors Celebration" from 4:30-6 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Works by approximately 50 authors will be featured, but the event celebrates the publishing accomplishments of all university staff by highlighting representative successes. 'It's Your Choice' period begins Oct. 4

Each year employees enrolled in one of the state group health insurance plans have the opportunity to change from one health insurance carrier to another or to add eligible family members who are not currently covered. This year, the "It's Your Choice" enrollment period is Oct. 4-29. The effective date of any change is Jan. 1, 2011. Detailed benefit information currently is available online and through the My UW System portal. A benefits fair will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 6 in Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Additional information about "It's Your Choice" and the benefits fair is available through Human Resources News. Human Resources also will be sending an "It's Your Choice" newsletter to eligible employees during the first week in October.

Open meetings with candidates for assistant dean of students

Aug. 20 is UW-Eau Claire common furlough day

The UW-Eau Claire campus will be closed Friday, Aug. 20, the first of four common furlough days for all UW-Eau Claire employees during the 2010-11 fiscal year. Full-time, 12-month employees must take a total of 16 furlough days during the two-year period beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 30, 2011. Employees who work less than full time will prorate their furlough days accordingly. The furlough days were mandated for all state and UW System employees by Gov. Jim Doyle in response to a projected state budget shortfall. Additional upcoming common furlough days for
2010-11 are Friday, Nov. 26; Monday, Dec. 27; and Friday, March 25, 2011. Find more information about implementation of the furlough mandate on the UW-Eau Claire Human Resources, UW System and UW-Eau Claire chancellor's websites.

Campus sidewalk repairs planned

Sections of sidewalk on upper and lower campus will be replaced between Aug. 11 and Aug. 23, weather permitting. On lower campus, the project will include repairs near Hibbard Hall, Schofield Hall, Zorn Arena, Campus School and Phillips Hall. Sidewalks near several upper-campus residence halls also will be repaired. Once new concrete has been placed, the affected areas will be blocked off with caution tape and barricades for five to seven days to allow for adequate cure time. Wisconsin Retirement System presentations to be offered

The Department of Employee Trust Funds will offer free public presentations in September, October and November about Wisconsin Retirement System benefits. The presentations will provide an opportunity for WRS members, their spouses and other individuals to learn more about ETF-administered benefit programs. Those considering or planning retirement in the near future are encouraged to attend.

2010-11 parking permit information

Payroll deduction form online
The payroll deduction form for 2010-11 UW-Eau Claire parking permits now is online. Those interested in payroll deduction are asked to complete the form and submit it electronically or through campus mail to the Parking and Transportation office. An economy "E" permit, which is valid in the recreation activity lot on MacArthur Avenue, has been added this year. The Route 9 city bus, which operates every 25 minutes, will provide transportation between the lot and campus. Permits will be available for pickup beginning Aug. 16 in the Parking and Transportation office (Schneider 106). New car pool parking permit for employees
Beginning in fall 2010, a new car pool permit will be available to UW-Eau Claire employees. Those interested in purchasing a car pool permit are asked to complete the car pool permit application and submit it electronically or through campus mail to the Parking and Transportation office. Faculty, staff invited to participate in 'Dismantling Racism' workshop

UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff are invited to a two-day workshop titled "Dismantling Racism: The Beginning" from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 26 and 27 in the Presidents Room of Davies Center. Dismantling Racism is a process of antiracist organizational assessment and change. Participants undergo a frank and honest evaluation of individual and organizational assumptions and views about race, power and privilege and then commit to an ongoing process of antiracist organizational change. The workshop will help establish the fourth cohort of participants who will become part of a universitywide, multiyear Dismantling Racism process begun in the College of Arts and Sciences in 2008. Many members of the first three cohorts report that they have found the experience to be profoundly rewarding and enlightening.

Proposed changes in College of Business

Change the accounting minor to require ACCT 314 rather than providing the choice of ACCT 312 (Managerial Accounting) or ACCT 314 (Cost Accounting).

It was moved and seconded by the College of Business Curriculum Committee to approve the following ACCT 312/314 requirement change for BSAD, MGMT, and MKTG majors, including all emphases:

Dean of students finalists to hold open forums during campus visits

Finalists for the position of dean of students at UW-Eau Claire will interview on campus during the weeks of May 3 and May 10. Each finalist will hold an open forum during his or her campus visit. All UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the forums.

All forums will be held from 11 a.m.-noon in Davies Theatre, Davies Center. Open forum dates for the four finalists are as follows (each candidate's name is linked to his or her curriculum vitae):

• May 3: Brian A. Carlisle, dean of students and associate vice president, San Francisco Art Institute.
• May 6: Orinthia T. Montague, associate vice provost/dean of students at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. 
• May 10: Jodi M. Thesing-Ritter, associate dean of students at UW-Eau Claire.
• May 13: Eric M. Norman, associate dean of students and director of Student Advocacy & Accountability at Louisiana State University.

Summer utility outages, projects announced

In 2010, as in past years, Facilities Planning and Management will take advantage of the summer period of low facilities use to perform essential maintenance, repair and construction that would be more disruptive at other times of the year. Guaranteed faculty/staff parking information

Application information for 2010-11 Guaranteed Faculty/Staff (GF) parking permits has been distributed by e-mail to all UW-Eau Claire employees. Those who currently have GF permits must submit new applications.

A UW-Eau Claire parking map and GF permit application are available online. The application should be filled out, saved and sent as an e-mail attachment to GFparking@uwec.edu by May 7. Notification of approval or denial will be e-mailed to each applicant in July.

'Breakfast — or Lunch — with Honors' planned for fall

Faculty and academic staff members are invited to present a topic and lead a discussion for the fall 2010 "Breakfast with Honors" or "Lunch with Honors" series.

Breakfasts are held from 7-7:50 a.m. Tuesdays or Wednesdays and include coffee, juices, milk, croissants, bagels, toast and pastries. Lunches, which feature house-made pizza, are held from noon-12:50 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. The audience typically is made up of 15-20 students from the Honors Program.

Those interested in presenting are asked to e-mail Dr. Jeff Vahlbush at vahlbujb@uwec.edu with a presentation title and time/day preferences by May 7.

Campus climate open house set for April 27

The campus community is invited to an open house from noon-1:30 p.m. April 27 with Dr. Sue Rankin, UW-Eau Claire's climate survey consultant, who will discuss the results of the fall 2009 campus climate survey. Survey results soon will be available online.
