'Meet a Fulbright Ambassador' set for Sept. 23

Interested in learning about Fulbright opportunities? The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will host Dr. Brian Sajko, a Fulbright ambassador, Sept. 23. ORSP will offer several events to enable faculty and students to learn about the many Fulbright opportunities that exist. A tentative schedule is as follows:

• Noon-1:30 p.m. — Lunch and presentation, CETL, Old Library 1142. 
• 2:30-2:55 p.m. — Visit with Dr. Sajko at ORSP open house, Schofield 17.
• 4-5 p.m. — Student session, Badger Room, Davies Center.

Design plans for new student center to be shared Sept. 15

The UW-Eau Claire community is invited to join the steering committee, the project manager from the Department of State Facilities and a major planner from Bray Architects for a presentation and Q&A session about design plans for the new university student center. Sessions will be held at noon and 4 p.m. Sept. 15 in Schofield Auditorium. Plans for the new university student center interior design, floor plans, exterior views, sustainability features and proposed timeline will be shared. View invitation.

Blugold Commitment differential tuition proposal forms now are online. Proposal workshops and drop-in sessions also are planned. Learn how to use the online forms, hear tips for preparing a successful proposal and work with Academic Affairs staff to refine your proposal idea.

Long-term care insurance presentation set for Sept. 8

UW-Eau Claire employees are invited to an on-campus presentation titled "Help Ensure Your Financial Independence with State Sponsored Long-Term Care." The presentation, led by Simon Liegel, a registered representative of John Hancock Financial Network, will be held at 10 a.m. and repeated at 1 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Arrowhead Room of Davies Center. The following questions will be addressed:

• What is long-term care?
• What are the chances of needing long-term care?
• What are the costs associated with long-term care?
• What are my benefits as a state of Wisconsin employee?
• What are the funding sources to pay for long-term care?

Save the date: Admissions open house is Aug. 25

Admissions staff members invite the campus community to view their new presentation space during an open house from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in Schofield 111. A running PowerPoint presentation highlighting key facts, statistics and information about Admissions work will be featured and refreshments will be offered. The open house also will serve as a big "thank you" to all who helped make the new room possible — the staff members who built the room, the artists who made it come alive and those who provided the resources.

Aug. 20 is UW-Eau Claire common furlough day

The UW-Eau Claire campus will be closed Friday, Aug. 20, the first of four common furlough days for all UW-Eau Claire employees during the 2010-11 fiscal year. Full-time, 12-month employees must take a total of 16 furlough days during the two-year period beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 30, 2011. Employees who work less than full time will prorate their furlough days accordingly. The furlough days were mandated for all state and UW System employees by Gov. Jim Doyle in response to a projected state budget shortfall. Additional upcoming common furlough days for
2010-11 are Friday, Nov. 26; Monday, Dec. 27; and Friday, March 25, 2011. Find more information about implementation of the furlough mandate on the UW-Eau Claire Human Resources, UW System and UW-Eau Claire chancellor's websites.

Campus sidewalk repairs planned

Sections of sidewalk on upper and lower campus will be replaced between Aug. 11 and Aug. 23, weather permitting. On lower campus, the project will include repairs near Hibbard Hall, Schofield Hall, Zorn Arena, Campus School and Phillips Hall. Sidewalks near several upper-campus residence halls also will be repaired. Once new concrete has been placed, the affected areas will be blocked off with caution tape and barricades for five to seven days to allow for adequate cure time. Wisconsin Retirement System presentations to be offered

The Department of Employee Trust Funds will offer free public presentations in September, October and November about Wisconsin Retirement System benefits. The presentations will provide an opportunity for WRS members, their spouses and other individuals to learn more about ETF-administered benefit programs. Those considering or planning retirement in the near future are encouraged to attend.

The presentation dates, times and locations are listed in the Aug. 6 issue of the ETF Employer Bulletin. The presentations also will be available to view online through the ETF website.

2010-11 parking permit information

Payroll deduction form online
The payroll deduction form for 2010-11 UW-Eau Claire parking permits now is online. Those interested in payroll deduction are asked to complete the form and submit it electronically or through campus mail to the Parking and Transportation office. An economy "E" permit, which is valid in the recreation activity lot on MacArthur Avenue, has been added this year. The Route 9 city bus, which operates every 25 minutes, will provide transportation between the lot and campus. Permits will be available for pickup beginning Aug. 16 in the Parking and Transportation office (Schneider 106). For more information, call Parking and Transportation at 715-836-2002 or Human Resources at 715-836-3871. The deadline for submitting payroll deduction forms is Sept. 10.

New car pool parking permit for employees
Beginning in fall 2010, a new car pool permit will be available to UW-Eau Claire employees. Those interested in purchasing a car pool permit are asked to complete the car pool permit application and submit it electronically or through campus mail to the Parking and Transportation office. An updated draft of the 2008-2009 Report on Publications and Other Scholarly Achievements, which is published by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, is now posted under the announcements section of the ORSP website. The publication includes listings of published works, extramural grants, faculty-student collaborations, directed studies and creative events that occurred between May 1, 2008 and Dec. 31, 2009. Faculty and staff are asked to review the report for accuracy. Additions or corrections should be sent to Melissa Castillo, ORSP graduate assistant, at castilmd@uwec.edu by Aug. 3.
