SHOW research team to visit Eau Claire

A research team from the UW School of Medicine and Public Health involved with the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin will be working in Eau Claire in October. SHOW is an ongoing statewide public health research project designed to measure the health of Wisconsin residents. Researchers from SHOW will visit 1,000 households around the state each year to recruit adults; 28 households in Eau Claire will be invited to participate. UWA opening meeting slated for Oct. 4

The University Women's Association, an organization for women faculty, staff and spouses, will hold its opening meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. 'Authors Celebration' set for Oct. 6

UW-Eau Claire will recognize the hard work and self-discipline it takes for university faculty and staff to bring scholarly work to the level of publication or performance with an "Authors Celebration" from 4:30-6 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Works by approximately 50 authors will be featured, but the event celebrates the publishing accomplishments of all university staff by highlighting representative successes. Faculty and staff are invited to join their colleagues for conversation and celebration. The event is sponsored by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, McIntyre Library and Academic Affairs.

'It's Your Choice' period begins Oct. 4

Each year employees enrolled in one of the state group health insurance plans have the opportunity to change from one health insurance carrier to another or to add eligible family members who are not currently covered. This year, the "It's Your Choice" enrollment period is Oct. 4-29. The effective date of any change is Jan. 1, 2011. Detailed benefit information currently is available online and through the My UW System portal. A benefits fair will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 6 in Council Fire Room of Davies Center. Additional information about "It's Your Choice" and the benefits fair is available through Human Resources News. Human Resources also will be sending an "It's Your Choice" newsletter to eligible employees during the first week in October.

Open meetings with candidates for assistant dean of students

Faculty, staff and students are invited to meet the two candidates for UW-Eau Claire assistant dean of students during open meetings Thursday, Sept. 23, and Friday, Sept. 24, in the Eagle Room of Davies Center:

Design plans for new student center to be shared Sept. 15

The UW-Eau Claire community is invited to join the steering committee, the project manager from the Department of State Facilities and a major planner from Bray Architects for a presentation and Q&A session about design plans for the new university student center. Admissions staff members invite the campus community to view their new presentation space during an open house from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in Schofield 111. Aug. 20 is UW-Eau Claire common furlough day

The UW-Eau Claire campus will be closed Friday, Aug. 20, the first of four common furlough days for all UW-Eau Claire employees during the 2010-11 fiscal year. Full-time, 12-month employees must take a total of 16 furlough days during the two-year period beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 30, 2011. Employees who work less than full time will prorate their furlough days accordingly. The furlough days were mandated for all state and UW System employees by Gov. Jim Doyle in response to a projected state budget shortfall. Additional upcoming common furlough days for
2010-11 are Friday, Nov. 26; Monday, Dec. 27; and Friday, March 25, 2011. Find more information about implementation of the furlough mandate on the UW-Eau Claire Human Resources, UW System and UW-Eau Claire chancellor's websites.

Campus sidewalk repairs planned

Sections of sidewalk on upper and lower campus will be replaced between Aug. 11 and Aug. 23, weather permitting. On lower campus, the project will include repairs near Hibbard Hall, Schofield Hall, Zorn Arena, Campus School and Phillips Hall. Sidewalks near several upper-campus residence halls also will be repaired. Once new concrete has been placed, the affected areas will be blocked off with caution tape and barricades for five to seven days to allow for adequate cure time. Wisconsin Retirement System presentations to be offered

The Department of Employee Trust Funds will offer free public presentations in September, October and November about Wisconsin Retirement System benefits. The presentations will provide an opportunity for WRS members, their spouses and other individuals to learn more about ETF-administered benefit programs. Those considering or planning retirement in the near future are encouraged to attend.

2010-11 parking permit information

Payroll deduction form online
The payroll deduction form for 2010-11 UW-Eau Claire parking permits now is online. Those interested in payroll deduction are asked to complete the form and submit it electronically or through campus mail to the Parking and Transportation office. An economy "E" permit, which is valid in the recreation activity lot on MacArthur Avenue, has been added this year. The Route 9 city bus, which operates every 25 minutes, will provide transportation between the lot and campus. Permits will be available for pickup beginning Aug. 16 in the Parking and Transportation office (Schneider 106). For more information, call Parking and Transportation at 715-836-2002 or Human Resources at 715-836-3871. The deadline for submitting payroll deduction forms is Sept. 10.

New car pool parking permit for employees
Beginning in fall 2010, a new car pool permit will be available to UW-Eau Claire employees. Those interested in purchasing a car pool permit are asked to complete the car pool permit application and submit it electronically or through campus mail to the Parking and Transportation office. Faculty, staff invited to participate in 'Dismantling Racism' workshop

UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff are invited to a two-day workshop titled "Dismantling Racism: The Beginning" from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 26 and 27 in the Presidents Room of Davies Center. Dismantling Racism is a process of antiracist organizational assessment and change. Participants undergo a frank and honest evaluation of individual and organizational assumptions and views about race, power and privilege and then commit to an ongoing process of antiracist organizational change. The workshop will help establish the fourth cohort of participants who will become part of a universitywide, multiyear Dismantling Racism process begun in the College of Arts and Sciences in 2008. Many members of the first three cohorts report that they have found the experience to be profoundly rewarding and enlightening.

Guaranteed faculty/staff parking information

Application information for 2010-11 Guaranteed Faculty/Staff (GF) parking permits has been distributed by e-mail to all UW-Eau Claire employees. Those who currently have GF permits must submit new applications.

A UW-Eau Claire parking map and GF permit application are available online. The application should be filled out, saved and sent as an e-mail attachment to GFparking@uwec.edu by May 7. Notification of approval or denial will be e-mailed to each applicant in July.

'Breakfast — or Lunch — with Honors' planned for fall

Faculty and academic staff members are invited to present a topic and lead a discussion for the fall 2010 "Breakfast with Honors" or "Lunch with Honors" series.

Breakfasts are held from 7-7:50 a.m. Tuesdays or Wednesdays and include coffee, juices, milk, croissants, bagels, toast and pastries. Lunches, which feature house-made pizza, are held from noon-12:50 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. The audience typically is made up of 15-20 students from the Honors Program.

The Department of Employee Trust Funds will offer a live, interactive Web presentation on the Wisconsin Retirement System from 7-9 p.m. April 15. A link to the presentation can be found on the ETF Web site.

ETF also will lead a public presentation from 7-9 p.m. April 20 in the Chippewa Valley Technical College auditorium, 620 W. Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire. That presentation and others also will be recorded for future viewing on the ETF Web site.

Meeting to discuss proposed steam line project environmental impact

A public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. April 8 in Room 202 of Schofield Hall regarding the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of a proposed steam and condensate line replacement/expansion project on the UW-Eau Claire campus. The Wisconsin Department of Administration’s Division of State Facilities has retained Cedar Corp. of Menomonie to complete data collection and the environmental analysis for the project.

April 2 is UW-Eau Claire common furlough day

The UW-Eau Claire campus will be closed Friday, April 2, the last of four common furlough days for all UW-Eau Claire employees during the 2009-10 fiscal year. Full-time, 12-month employees must take a total of 16 furlough days during the two-year period beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 30, 2011. Employees who work less than full time will prorate their furlough days accordingly. The furlough days were mandated for all state and UW System employees by Gov. Jim Doyle in response to a projected state budget shortfall. Employees had previous common furlough days Aug. 7, Nov. 27 and Dec. 28. Big changes coming for student registration and more

UW-Eau Claire is implementing new software to handle student registration, grading, admissions, financial aid and student financials. Starting with processing for fall 2010, all these activities will be using the new MyBlugold CampS software. The software is named based on where it can be found (within the MyBlugold system) and a shortened name of the Oracle Campus Solutions software being used.

The system has been implemented in stages, starting with the Admissions office and personal demographic information last fall. New fall 2010 applicants have used the system to check their admissions status, and all students and staff have used the MyBlugold CampS Personal Information screens to check and update demographic information such as addresses, phone numbers and emergency contact data.

Since planning and registration for fall 2010 is starting shortly, most students will begin to use MyBlugold CampS more heavily within the next few weeks. They will use this new software to search the fall class schedule, plan their classes within their “shopping cart” and then enroll in their classes based on their enrollment appointment. All these activities can be done within the MyBlugold CampS Student Center, which will show them any Holds or To Do List items they may have to complete (for example, paying their $100 registration deposit). Faculty and advisers will be able to assist their advisees by using the MyBlugold CampS Advisor Center to view data regarding their advisees.

Financial aid communications with students also will use the Student Center, starting in late March. Students will be able to see what, if any, information is still needed for their financial aid applications. And when aid is awarded this coming summer, they’ll be able to see that information in the Financials section of the Student Center. When it comes to paying tuition, fees, room and board, this information also will be available in the Financials area.

Students and staff have been or will be notified of this new change through a “Big Changes” series of e-mails. Each e-mail gives information about an aspect of the system and includes a short tutorial or options to get more information. Copies of these communications, plus instructions on using features, can be found online at http://www.uwec.edu/help/camps.htm.

Swimming and diving team to offer lessons

UW-Eau Claire's swimming and diving team will hold swimming and diving lessons April 5-22 and April 26-May 13 for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Lessons will be in the McPhee Physical Education Center pool. Registration deadlines are April 1 for the first session and April 23 for the second session. Campus Campaign 2010: A thank you from the campaign chairs

To date 381 UW-Eau Claire current and retired employees have contributed more than $228,000 to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation through Campus Campaign 2010. Close to 325 members of the campus community attended the Foundation's annual Employee Appreciation Luncheon Feb. 25.

While the active phase of the campus campaign is over, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation accepts gifts, payroll deduction pledges and other commitments throughout the year, so members of the campus community are invited and encouraged to give anytime. IRE grants available

The UW System's Institute on Race and Ethnicity has announced that grants in the following categories are available for the 2010-11 fiscal year:

• Category A (research): To support scholarly research on topics addressing race, ethnicity, diversity, inclusivity and/or equity with the intention of publication.
• Category B (curriculum development): To support the development and teaching of new courses pertaining to race, ethnicity, diversity, inclusivity and/or equity.
• Category C (campus activities): A miscellaneous category designed to support campus activities, guest lectures, fine arts performances, curricular infusion and instructional innovations, and/or events regarding race, ethnicity, diversity, inclusivity and/or equity.
• Faculty diversity research awards: To provide release time and support for tenure-track faculty members for scholarly research and writing to enhance their opportunities for achieving tenure.

Campus Campaign 2010: Foundation grants make cultural immersion experiences possible

Two new cultural immersion programs for UW-Eau Claire graduate nursing students have been made possible by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. The Foundation also continues its support of a third cultural immersion experience, UW-Eau Claire's Civil Rights Pilgrimage.

During August 2009, six graduate nursing students and Dr. Cheryl Lapp, professor of nursing, spent six days at the reservation in Lac du Flambeau, where they had direct nursing experience at the Peter Christensen Health Center with the Lac Du Flambeau band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

As the result of another Foundation grant, six additional UW-Eau Claire graduate nursing students and nursing professor Dr. Lee-Ellen Kirkhorn will travel during spring break to the Steinbruck Center for Urban Studies, a guest hostel of the Luther Place Memorial Church in Washington, D.C. They will stay at the hostel and provide care at several agencies serving the homeless.

The Foundation also provided funding for the UW-Eau Claire Civil Rights Pilgrimage Winterim and upcoming spring break trips.

Campus Campaign 2010: Staff members receive Classified Staff Grant Fund awards

This week's Campus Campaign highlight is the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's Classified Staff Grant Fund.

Recently receiving $250 awards from the fund for advancing their education were Judith Gray, academic department associate for the UW-Eau Claire women's studies program, and Barbara Arnold, academic publications and curriculum coordinator in the UW-Eau Claire Registrar's Office.

The Classified Staff Grant Fund was established by Linda Haag and Susie Warden, who completed bachelor's degrees at UW-Eau Claire while working as full-time members of the university's classified staff. They created the Classified Staff Grant Fund after completing their degrees to make certain other classified staff members had a similar opportunity.

Education majors to offer free foreign language classes

UW-Eau Claire students enrolled in "Teaching Foreign Languages in Grades 1-9" will offer a series of exploratory foreign language classes for elementary school students in grades 1-5. Classes are beginning French, beginning German, beginning Spanish and continuing Spanish, and will help UW-Eau Claire education majors prepare to teach foreign languages at the elementary level. Spring and summer utility outages announced

The spring 2010 steam outage will be held from 6 p.m. May 22 through 4 p.m. June 1. The outage will result in the following: No potable hot water except in Chancellor's, Thomas and Murray halls, all hall directors' apartments, Zorn Arena, Brewer Hall, Human Sciences and Services, McIntyre Library, Nursing, Crest Wellness Center and Haas Fine Arts (isolated areas). The summer 2010 planned electrical outage is scheduled for 7 a.m.-3 p.m. June 12, and will affect the following buildings: Nursing, Phillips, Schneider and McPhee. These annually-occurring utility outages allow for preventive maintenance and repairs that prevent unplanned emergency outages due to breakdowns. Campus Campaign 2010: Supporting departmental funds

A kitchen renovation for UW-Eau Claire's biology department was made possible by the Gordon Bartelt Biology Fund established with the UW-Eau Claire Foundation by Margaret Bartelt, a UW-Eau Claire alumna, in memory of her husband, also a UW-Eau Claire alumnus. Both Margaret and Gordon were biology majors. The fund's income supports faculty and staff development and infrastructure needs in the biology department.

Since 1982 UW-Eau Claire's women's studies program has recognized exemplary student projects and research nominated by faculty mentors. Emphasizing the contributions and roles of women, these works demonstrate the importance of creative student-faculty collaboration. In addition to originality, timeliness and contributions to the field, award criteria include emphasis on women and the potential impact of the project. Papers and projects in fulfillment of class requirements during the sessions of spring, summer and fall 2009 are eligible for nomination. The Career Services Charitable Outreach student organization and Career Services staff members thank everyone who donated to the Seniors' Secret Santa program last month. UW-Eau Claire staff members donated $1,559, which was matched by Mega Pick 'n Save, for a total of $3,118. Cashiers gave out $25 gift cards to 124 struggling senior citizens. Thank you, again, for your generosity.

WWHEL, WHE to sponsor women’s retreat Jan. 20

UW-Eau Claire women staff members are invited to attend the Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Women’s Retreat from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 20 in Room 119 of the Nursing building at UW-Eau Claire. Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership and Women in Higher Education are sponsoring the event to help women employees revitalize before the hustle of the spring semester begins. The cost to participate is $10 for admission and lunch or $15 for admission, lunch and a chair massage. McIntyre Library tours to be offered in February

McIntyre Library staff members will conduct
30-minute library tours Feb. 1-11, briefly describing services, assistance and collections. Tour times are varied (see schedule below) and are designed to meet the needs of a variety of students. While the tours are student-focused, others also are welcome. Tours will begin in the library's Grand Corridor during the following days and times:

• 5:30 p.m. Mondays.
• 3 p.m. Tuesdays.
• 10 a.m. Wednesdays.
• Noon Thursdays.
