Summer 2012 orientation advisers sought

Faculty and teaching academic staff members are invited to apply to become 2012 summer orientation advisers. The positions are 37½ percent summer positions.

Training sessions will be held June 4-8, 2012. Fifteen one-day sessions will be held during the first three weeks of the eight-week summer session, June 11-29. In addition, advisers will be involved in one-day orientation programs for new students Aug. 20, 2012, and Jan. 18, 2013. Advisers new to orientation will be required to attend two training sessions in April.

Individuals selected for these positions must be current members of the faculty or teaching academic staff who have a commitment to advising, a "track record" of good advising and a real interest in working with first-year students. Those chosen also must have currently assigned advisees within their departments. Advisers must be available for all of the dates listed above. Preference will be given to those who do not teach during the three-week or first four-week summer session.

The Saving Race set for Oct. 22

UW-Eau Claire will hold the sixth annual running of The Saving Race Oct. 22 to coincide with UW-Eau Claire's Parents' Weekend. The 5K run and 1-mile family run/walk, organized by the Center for Alcohol Studies and Education, will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 22 in the Haas Fine Arts Center area. In honor of friends who take care of one another, this year's theme is "Be an Everyday Hero." Race participants are encouraged to come dressed as a superhero. Faculty/Staff Appreciation passes available for Blugold athletics events

As a thank you to the many faculty and staff who have directly or indirectly supported UW-Eau Claire's 560 student-athletes and athletics program, the UW-Eau Claire Student Affairs division announces the availability of complimentary Faculty/Staff Appreciation passes, good for two-person admissions to four Blugold athletics home competitions during the 2011-12 academic year. The passes provide general admission seating for regular season games only. (Per NCAA/WIAC policies, complimentary admission is not allowed for post-season play.)

The passes are good for sporting events for which admission fees are charged: football, women's volleyball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's basketball, gymnastics, mens and women's swimming and diving, and wrestling. Faculty/Staff Appreciation passes are available at the Service Center in the east lobby of Davies Center. Just show your faculty/staff Blugold Card to receive your pass, and then check the Blugold athletics schedules online to decide which events to attend. Go Blugolds!

Flags to be flown at half-staff Oct. 8

As directed by Gov. Scott Walker, the flag of the United States and the flag of the state of Wisconsin will be flown at half-staff at all buildings, grounds and military installations of the state of Wisconsin beginning at sunrise and ending at sunset Oct. 8, 2011. This will be done as a mark of respect for firefighters of this state who have given their lives in the line of duty (more information) and in honor of Army Sergeant Jakob J. Roelli who lost his life while serving his country during Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan (more information).

Benefit enrollment and change period begins Oct. 3

Each year, employees enrolled in one of the state group health insurance plans have the opportunity to change from one health insurance carrier to another or to add eligible family members who are not currently covered. This year, the benefit enrollment and change period runs from Oct. 3-28. Please note the following:

• Employees are encouraged to attend the Health Fair from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 11 in Zorn Arena.
• Group Health Cooperative will not be available in 2012, so employees currently covered by GHC will need to change carriers.
• Individual/family life insurance coverage can be increased during enrollment and change period.

Putnam Drive to close morning of Sept. 27

Putnam Drive on the UW-Eau Claire campus will be closed from 6-9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, between the Nursing Building parking lot entrance and the wooden bridge and stairway leading to and from upper campus. The closure is a safety precaution during removal of a cooling tower from the roof of the Nursing Building. Students, faculty and staff are asked to use the Nursing Building's front entrance during the closure.

CETL i>clicker update

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at UW-Eau Claire offers the following information about i>clickers:

• The University Bookstore is selling i>clicker2 and will no longer sell i>clicker 1.
• Students can pick up a form from the bookstore to receive $10 for returning their old clickers.
• The campus will not support the new functions of the i>clicker2 this year. The idea is for students who already have a clicker to not purchase a new one this year.
• Both the i>clicker 1 and 2 can be used for multiple choice questions (A-E).
• When downloading the new software from www.iclicker.com, versions 6 or 5 can be used this year.

McIntyre Library no longer housing VHS tapes

The use of VHS is no longer supported by Learning and Technology Services at UW-Eau Claire. Thus, VHS tapes have been removed from McIntyre Library's shelves and catalog. WAGE Center announces name change

The name of the Women's and Gender Equity Center (known as the WAGE Center) at UW-Eau Claire has been changed to better reflect the inclusion of programming and services to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities. The center's name now is the Women's and LGBTQ Resource Center. The Women's and LGBTQ Resource Center advocates for the welfare of women as well as the LGBTQ community. The staff provides resources, information and programming in coordination with academic departments, advisory committees and other organizations that address challenges faced by women and the LGBTQ campus community. New opportunities available in Domestic Intercultural Immersion program

Undergraduate Studies has announced two new opportunities to work with the Domestic Intercultural Immersion program at UW-Eau Claire. A faculty or instructional academic staff member is sought to serve as the DII co-coordinator of project development; and a faculty, instructional academic staff or staff member is sought to serve as the DII co-coordinator of logistics. The positions, funded through the Blugold Commitment, require a three-year commitment beginning July 1. The application deadline is June 24. Software upgrade deadlines for faculty/staff computers

Learning and Technology Services reminds faculty and staff that Aug. 1 is the deadline for upgrading faculty and staff office computers to Windows 7 and Office 2010.  For those whose computers already have Windows 7 installed, June 1 is the deadline for installation of Office 2010. Also note: A major update to Windows 7 will occur at 10 p.m. June 4. It will take about 20 minutes to complete the installation after rebooting your computer. Read the complete details on upcoming mandatory software upgrades.

Foundation reminder about donors, financial commitments

As fiscal year 2011 winds to a close, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation wants to remind all departments/colleges/units about working with donors and obtaining financial commitments that would be considered pledges. If there are any such discussions, all documents, signed pledges, commitments or any type of information regarding gifts through the Foundation must be received by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation before June 30, 2011.

According to generally accepted accounting principles, under which the Foundation operates, all gift pledges agreed to and documented must be received and accepted by the Foundation, as the fiscal agent, before June 30, 2011. If the pledge was committed verbally or in writing, that information must be provided to the Foundation before June 30 so that the Foundation can acknowledge and record the pledge in the fiscal year it was made.

Guaranteed faculty/staff parking information

Application information for 2011-12 Guaranteed Faculty/Staff (GF) parking permits has been distributed by email to all UW-Eau Claire employees. The GF Permit Application Form can be accessed through the Parking and Transportation Services website. Those who currently have GF permits must submit new applications. Notification of approval or denial will be sent to each applicant's UW-Eau Claire email address in July. Nominations sought for classified staff excellence award

The Classified Staff Awards Committee invites nominations for the Excellence in Performance Award to be given in the fall of 2011. The UW-Eau Claire Foundation will present $1,500 to the recipient. The award is presented annually to a member of the classified staff who, in the opinion of colleagues, excels in performance and service to the university. Any member of the academic staff, administration, classified staff, faculty or student body may nominate a permanent full- or part-time member of the classified staff for the award. Persons who wish to make nominations should complete and return the nomination form along with required supporting documentation by May 13. More information.

Emergency notification system test set for May 2

UW-Eau Claire will conduct a campuswide test of its emergency notification system between 11 a.m. and noon Monday, May 2.

Before the test, UW-Eau Claire students and employees are encouraged to sign up online for emergency notifications via cell phone (text and/or text-to-speech) and e-mail messages to non-university e-mail accounts.

The test will include the following notification methods:

• email message to all student and employee university email addresses;
• announcement on UW-Eau Claire Web pages;
• announcements on UW-Eau Claire official Facebook page and Twitter feed;
• text and email messages to cell phones and non-university email addresses that have been registered with the university's emergency notification system;
• pop-up message on all university-owned computers (except for Macintosh computers), including those in offices, labs and classrooms;
• message sent over the university's carillon; and
• announcement on the university's emergency website, http://emergency.uwec.edu/.

Following the test, students, faculty and staff will be encouraged via email to complete a brief Web survey to provide feedback regarding the emergency notification system. (The survey will not be available until May 2.)

Nominations sought for faculty excellence awards

The Faculty Awards Committee invites nominations for the Excellence in Scholarship and Excellence in Service awards. Excellence is the standard that students and faculty strive to achieve at UW-Eau Claire. The Excellence in Scholarship and Excellence in Service awards are designed to recognize and reward those faculty members who have put forth exceptional effort to establish excellence in those areas. Award stipends of $1,500 from the UW-Eau Claire Foundation accompany the announcement of the awards at the fall breakfast meeting. College of Nursing and Health Sciences to host accreditation visits

The UW-Eau Claire College of Nursing and Health Sciences will host two accreditation visits on campus this month. The National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council will visit April 11 and 12 to review the environmental public health program. From April 18-20 the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education will review the college's baccalaureate, master's and doctor of nursing practice degree programs. CSD series concludes with April 15 presentation

The UW-Eau Claire communication sciences and disorders department will host its final professional seminar for the 2010-11 academic year on April 15. The following presentation will be held from 1-3 p.m. in Room 226 of the Human Sciences and Services building:

• Dr. Vicki Samelson of the UW-Eau Claire communication sciences and disorders department, has expertise in child language and language processing in mathematics. Arithmetic word problems are especially difficult for children with low oral language skill. The discussion will illustrate how children with low oral language skill solve word problems and how to design interventions to improve their problem solving skills and their comprehension of mathematical language.

Academic Skills Center earns CRLA re-certification

UW-Eau Claire's Academic Skills Center recently earned re-certification in the College Reading and Learning Association’s (CRLA) International Tutor Program Certification (ITPC). The lengthy application process was completed last summer, and the ASC is now certified through Nov. 30, 2015.
    
The purpose of the ITPC program is twofold. First, it provides recognition and positive reinforcement for tutors' successful work from an international organization, CRLA. Second, CRLA's tutor certification process sets an internationally accepted standard of skills and training for tutors.
 
ITPC has been endorsed by the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations, National Association for Developmental Education, and the Commission XVI of the American College Personnel Association. Other national organizations/programs that endorse CRLA's ITPC program for Tutor Training include the National College Learning Center Association, the Association for the Tutoring Profession and the National Center for Developmental Education.

April 7 presentation to address Supplemental Instruction program

UW-Eau Claire's Student Success Network will host a presentation April 7 for faculty, staff and administrators about the Supplemental Instruction program. The nationally acclaimed program for student success and retention seeks to reduce D, F and W rates in historically difficult courses.

Dr. Maureen Hurley, from the International Center for Supplemental Instruction at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will give a 90-minute presentation at 9:30 a.m. that will be repeated at 2 p.m. Both presentations will take place in the Hibbard Penthouse, located on the top floor of Hibbard Humanities Hall.

March 25 is UW-Eau Claire common furlough day

The UW-Eau Claire campus will be closed Friday, March 25, the fourth common furlough day for all UW-Eau Claire employees during the 2010-11 fiscal year. Full-time, 12-month employees must take a total of 16 furlough days during the two-year period beginning July 1, 2009, and ending June 30, 2011. Employees who work less than full time will prorate their furlough days accordingly. The furlough days were mandated for all state and UW System employees by Gov. Jim Doyle in response to a projected state budget shortfall. Faculty/Academic Staff Forums
