McIntyre Library offers voter registration through Oct. 17

Individuals who must register to vote before the November election may register at McIntyre Library until Oct. 17. After Oct. 17, Wisconsin state law requires that voters register at their appropriate municipal clerk's office. Individuals who will vote in the city of Eau Claire, the town of Washington or the town of Union can register at McIntyre Library during the following times:
  • Friday, Oct. 12, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 14, 12:30 p.m.-midnight

Register YOUR info before Oct. 18 emergency notification system test

UW-Eau Claire will conduct a campuswide test of its emergency notification system between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.

The test will include the following notification methods:
  • Text message to cell phones that have been registered in e2Campus, UW-Eau Claire’s emergency notification system.
  • Pop-up message on all university-owned computers, including those in offices, labs and classrooms.
  • Email to all students, faculty and staff.
  • Announcement on the UW-Eau Claire home page.
The test will help university officials determine how an alert will impact the campus and communication infrastructure. Following the test, faculty, staff and students will be asked to complete a brief Web survey to provide feedback regarding the emergency notification system.

UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students who would like to register cell phone numbers or non-university email addresses in the emergency notification system are encouraged to do so before the campuswide test. Authors Celebration set for Oct. 11

Flags flown at half-staff Oct. 7, 8 and 13

In accordance with Public Law 107-51, President Obama ordered the flag of the United States to be flown at half-staff on all federal office buildings Oct. 7 in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. Gov. Walker also directed that federal and state flags to be flown at
half-staff at all buildings, grounds and military installations of the state of Wisconsin in accordance with the president's order.

Flags at Wisconsin National Guard armories, air bases and other facilities across the state will fly at half-staff Oct. 8 as a mark of respect for Pfc. Arthur W. Hopfensperger of the United States Army who lost his life while serving his country during the Korean War. The Guard will render these honors in accordance with an executive order issued by Gov. Scott Walker.

Gov. Walker has issued an executive order to lower the flags at all buildings, grounds and military installations of the state of Wisconsin Oct. 13 as a mark of respect for the firefighters of the state of Wisconsin who have given their lives in the line of duty. More information.

New signs designate campus smoking areas

The installation of signs identifying designated smoking areas on campus has been completed. A new UW-Eau Claire smoking policy went into effect May 1.

The policy prohibits smoking on campus except in designated areas and on city-owned streets that run through campus. View the policy and map of designated smoking areas.

The policy was created by a committee of UW-Eau Claire staff and students appointed by then Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich. In 2010 Levin-Stankevich received two different proposals regarding campus smoking restrictions: one from the University Senate (composed of representatives from the university's faculty and academic staff) calling for a
tobacco-free campus, and one from the Student Senate objecting to the tobacco ban but recommending that smoking be shifted away from areas heavily traveled by non-smokers, building entrances and air intakes. The chancellor's committee was charged with creating a policy that, as proposed by the Student Senate, would establish fewer smoking areas on campus.

Benefit enrollment/change period begins Oct. 8; Health/benefits fair set for Oct. 9

Each year, employees enrolled in one of the state group health insurance plans have the opportunity to change from one health insurance carrier to another or to add eligible family members who are not currently covered. This year, the benefit enrollment and change period runs from Oct. 8-Nov. 2. Employees are encouraged to attend the health and benefits fair from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Dakota Ballroom of Davies Center. Classified Staff Council implements employee appreciation program

Do you know of a classified staff member doing a great job? The Classified Staff Council has implemented an employee appreciation program for classified staff. Nominees will be eligible for a prize drawing each month, and a certificate and pin will be given to all nominees. Candidates will remain in the drawing for six months, starting from the month of their nomination. Nominations can be made by members of the campus community via an online form on the Classified Staff Council website. Campus information regarding Sept. 13 Vice President Biden visit

Some limited campus building and street closures, class location changes and redirected bus routes will be in effect on Thursday, Sept. 13, associated with the special event in UW-Eau Claire's Zorn Arena.

Street and sidewalk closures
From approximately 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the following street sections and sidewalks will be closed:
  • Garfield Avenue from Park Avenue west to the Ecumenical Religious Center parking lot 
  • Park Avenue from the Hibbard parking lot entrance south to McKinley Avenue
  • Sidewalks on both sides of Park Avenue from Garfield Avenue south to McKinley Avenue
From approximately 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the following street sections and sidewalks will be closed:
  • Garfield Avenue from State Street west to Park Avenue 
  • McKinley Avenue from State Street west to Park Avenue
Building closures
The following closures will be in effect in the Kjer Theatre/Brewer Hall/Zorn Arena complex:
  • The entire Kjer/Brewer/Zorn complex will be closed for a security sweep from 6:30-8:30 a.m. No faculty, staff or students will be allowed in the buildings during this time.
  • The entire first floor of Brewer Hall and the hallway from Kjer Theatre to Brewer Hall will be closed from 6:30 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m.
  • Access to the second floor and basement of Brewer Hall will be restored after the security sweep is completed at 8:30 a.m.
  • Access to Kjer Theatre from Garfield Avenue (via the door next to the loading dock) will be restored at 8:30 a.m. Access to the theater also will be available from the basement of Brewer Hall.
Class relocations
Classes that normally meet at 8 a.m. in Brewer Hall have been moved to other locations. Contact the College of Education and Human Sciences at 715-836-3671 for more information.

Bus route changes
From approximately 10:30 a.m. to noon, Eau Claire Transit bus routes serving campus will be redirected. The Water St. route bus will stop at the southwest corner of Summit and Park avenues. The Stein Boulevard route bus will stop at the northeast corner of State Street and Garfield Avenue. The bus drivers will be in communication if there are people who need to transfer from one bus to the other. The buses may run a bit off schedule due to route changes and any changes in the vice president’s travel time.

Temporary process for accessing Foundation fund information and alumni data

In April, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation and Alumni Relations office converted from the Bridge legacy system to The Raiser’s Edge and Financial Edge, which are not connected to PeopleSoft. (Campus Solutions did not have the functionality needed by the Foundation and alumni office, so a different system was acquired).

The Foundation and alumni office have been working to provide the customer service the university community expects in the areas of access to Foundation fund accounting information and alumni data. It is not yet known when that functionality will be available. In the meantime, please send email to Robin Leary at learyrj@uwec.edu for that information. She will provide a report showing current Foundation account balances and transaction history. Those who attempt to access Foundation fund account information from any other source will NOT be viewing current information. This is especially important for those who would not want to use old data to determine spending needs and/or scholarship award information.

To ensure a user-friendly process for alumni list requests, please give the Foundation and alumni office staff as much lead time as possible. It is not possible to guarantee an immediate response time on requests for information. The Foundation and alumni office staff are striving to provide accurate and timely information and thank the university faculty and staff for their understanding and patience.

LTS introduces new MyBlugold system


UW-Eau Claire's MyBlugold system has a new look and feel, as well as expanded capabilities for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff.

The new system, which launched today, was developed during summer 2012 using Microsoft SharePoint 2010. Users can find the link to the system in the Current Students and Faculty/Staff dropdowns in the horizontal navigation bar on all UW-Eau Claire top-level Web pages.

The old MyBlugold system will be kept available for comparison purposes until Sept. 14.

MyBlugold is an intranet and digital workplace for UW-Eau Claire faculty, staff and students. The new system (1) replaces the original series of reference pages that linked to internal services; (2) serves as an intranet where campus departments and offices can create their own sites to publish internal information for students and staff; and (3) provides a digital workplace where documents can be stored and cross-functional teams can participate in projects.

"Sharepoint is a good fit for this campus environment,” said Craig Mey, UW-Eau Claire's director of Learning and Technology Services. "The new MyBlugold will help foster inclusive collaboration among our students, faculty and staff. The new system has many nice features that allow people with busy schedules to flexibly participate."

Lower-campus electrical outage planned for Aug. 25

On Saturday, Aug. 25, UW-Eau Claire's lower campus will be without electrical power. The Davies Student Center is one exception and will be unaffected. The Nursing Building will have its electricity interrupted for a short time at the beginning and end of the day. Davies Center and the Nursing Building will be without air conditioning for the entire day, as the central chiller in McIntyre Library will be down. Facilities Management announcements

The Facilities Management unit supervised by Erik Simonsen is now called Material Management, Mail and Receiving.

The Material Management area is responsible for managing the following: capital inventory for the campus; the Material and Supply Store (formerly Central Stores); UW Eau Claire's use of the Madison Distribution System (MDS) for office supplies; the Surplus Store; Facilities Management inventory stock; the loading dock and warehouse; and the automated package-tracking system data and software system.

Mail Services is responsible for delivering and picking up mail and packages; processing outgoing U.S. mail; collecting bulk mail; and managing the Pitney Bowes data, cost and chargeback process.

The Receiving area is responsible for receiving all semi, UPS, FedEx, Staples, postal and other truck deliveries; processing packages through the automated package-tracking system; distributing larger packages and freight throughout campus; and processing and distributing Facilities Management inventory stock.

Garfield Avenue footbridge ramp to close July 27

Repairs on the UW-Eau Claire footbridge over the Chippewa River will require the temporary closure of the bridge's south-end ramp along Garfield Avenue beginning July 27. The ramp is expected to reopen late the week of July 30-Aug. 3. During the closure, access to and exit from the bridge will be via the steps located opposite the ramp. Bicyclists will need to carry their bicycles up and down the steps during that time. Students, faculty and staff unable to access or exit the bridge via the steps due to disabilities may arrange for conveyance van service by calling 715-836-2544. New Davies to open doors July 30

UW-Eau Claire's new W.R. Davies Student Center will open for business at 8 a.m. Monday, July 30. Building hours for the rest of the summer will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and hours during the academic year will be from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday.

"We are grateful to all the students who have made this building possible," said Dr. Beth Hellwig, vice chancellor for student affairs. "In addition, thanks go out to everyone who has contributed to planning, designing and constructing the new W.R. Davies Student Center — our new campus living room."

Interim Chancellor Gilles Bousquet and student body president Cory Fish will enter the new student center at 8 a.m. July 30 as the building's first official visitors. Bousquet and Fish will be on hand near the Service Center to make some initial comments and greet students, faculty and staff. They will proceed to The Cabin, where they will be the first customers to order coffee.

Access to the building should be via the southeast entrance, which faces the Phillips parking lot, or the northwest entrance, which can be reached via a north-south sidewalk that runs to the west of the Old Library and McIntyre Library

The facility's opening will be a "soft opening," meaning some services will still be limited and finishing work will continue throughout the building.

The Service Center, University Bookstore and University Centers offices will be open July 30. Limited food service consisting of "grab and go" fare, including coffee and other beverages, sandwiches and salads, will be available in The Cabin. Additional food venues will open over the next few weeks, the U.S. Bank office is expected to open Aug. 7, and U.S. Bank and RCU ATMs will be available soon.

Student-led tours of the new building will be offered July 30-Aug. 3. Tours, which will last from one hour to 90 minutes, will depart from the Service Center at 10 a.m., noon, 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily. No advance reservations are needed. Individuals planning to take a tour are asked to wear closed-toe shoes for safety reasons, as final construction work continues in some parts of the building.

"We thank people for their patience during our soft opening," said Charles Farrell, director of University Centers. "People will see some finishing touches and other work still going on and furniture arriving in some areas in the coming weeks. Our plan is to be up and fully ready to go by residence hall move-in day on August 30."

A student celebration of the building's opening is being planned for the start of the fall semester, and an official ribbon-cutting and grand opening event will be held during UW-Eau Claire's homecoming weekend in late September.

August steam outage announced

A campus steam outage will occur from 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, through 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13. As a result, no potable hot water will be available in campus buildings except in Chancellors, Thomas and Murray halls, all hall directors' apartments, Zorn Arena, Brewer Hall, Human Sciences and Services Building, McIntyre Library, Nursing Building, Crest Wellness Center, Ade Olson addition, Haas Fine Arts Center (isolated areas), Hibbard Hall and Phillips Hall. Electrical outage set for June 30

An electrical outage, scheduled for Saturday, June 30, will affect Schofield Hall, old Davies Center, Old Library, McIntyre Library and Putnam Hall. Campus Surplus Store opens in new location

The UW-Eau Claire Surplus Store announces its grand reopening of surplus sales in the store's new location in the Maintenance and Central Stores Building on upper campus. On June 20 and July 11 from 1-3:30 p.m. and continuing at that same time every other Wednesday thereafter, university employees may view and reclaim surplus property for university departmental use. Public surplus sales will be held June 21 and July 12 from 3-6 p.m and continuing at that same time every other Thursday thereafter. Summer bike rental program available to students, faculty, staff

University Recreation and Sport Facilities has announced a summer session bicycle rental program for UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff. Through Aug. 2, UW-Eau Claire's Environmental Adventure Center will rent bicycles in the Water Street parking lot at the corner of First Avenue and Water Street from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The $5 rental fee includes a bike, lock and helmet. Bikes may be returned to the corner of First Avenue and Water Street by 2 p.m. or to the Environmental Adventure Center in Hilltop Center on upper campus by 6 p.m.

"This program offers the opportunity for students, faculty and staff to both get some exercise and explore the community during the week, whether it's an employee on a lunch break or a student with time before or after class," said Vicki Funne Reed, director of University Recreation and Sport Facilities. "Area restaurants, the Downtown Farmers Market, Carson Park and the Chippewa River Trail are a just few of the many possible destinations easily reachable by bike."

Students, faculty and staff also may bring their own bikes to the rental site for free safety inspections. Bicycle safety information from the "Share & Be Aware" program of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation also will be available.

Flags to be flown at half-staff May 15

As directed by Gov. Scott Walker, the flag of the United States and the flag of the state of Wisconsin will be flown at half-staff at all buildings, grounds and military installations of the state of Wisconsin beginning at sunrise and ending at sunset May 15, 2012. This will be done as a mark of respect for police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. In addition, any jurisdiction of this state is authorized to fly the flag of the United States and the flag of the state of Wisconsin at half-staff on any day during Police Week, May 13-May 19, 2012, for the purpose of honoring, in a public ceremony, peace officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Flags to be flown at half-staff May 8

As directed by Gov. This will be done as a mark of respect for Cpl. Benjamin H. Neal of Orfordville, a member of the U.S. Army 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C, who lost his life while serving his country in Afghanistan. G parking permit applications due May 11

parking lotEach person desiring a G (formerly GF) parking permit for 2012-13 must submit a completed application form. Go to the Parking and Transportation website and click on the G Permit Application Form link.

The application form is an BP Logix e-form. Applicants should log in with their UW-Eau Claire username and password. Personal data will load into the form automatically. Applicants need to select a preferred parking lot, check one of the three G permit criteria and justify their request in the textbox area. After completing the e-form, applicants should click the Submit button. An automated email response will confirm that applications have been received.

As in prior years, it is anticipated that demand for G permits will exceed the number of permits authorized for issuance. The fee for a G permit for 2012-13 is $515. Applications should be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2012, for priority consideration. Changes to Mail Services, Central Stores and UPS/Fedex delivery process announced

mailThe Administrative Services unit within Facilities Management has announced important changes to the Mail Services, Central Stores, and UPS/FedEx delivery process at UW-Eau Claire. To better align with the university's Strategic Plan, improve sustainability efforts and not increase the cost of processing mail, the chancellor's executive staff have approved a new delivery and pickup system.

Beginning April 16, 2012, we will transition to a system of four concurrent mail and package routes on campus. Each route will be staffed by one delivery person who will deliver mail, UPS/FedEx, Central Stores orders and Staples (MDS) orders. This staff member also will pick up mail from departments at that time. This will be the only delivery and pickup to individual departments each day. Staff members will, however, pick up at approximately 2:45 p.m. from the appropriate drop boxes at the end of each route. Pick up times will be posted on each drop box.

The new routes will be structured as follows:
  • Route 1, 11 a.m. — Schofield Hall, Old Library, McIntyre Library.
  • Route 2, 12:30 p.m.— Phillips Hall, Davies Center, Nursing Building, Putnam Hall, Thomas Hall.
  • Route 3, 12:30 p.m. — Schneider Hall, Brewer Hall, Hibbard Hall.
  • Route 4, 12:30 p.m. — McPhee Center, Upper Campus residence halls, Hilltop Center, Crest Wellness, Haas Fine Arts Center, Human Sciences and Services Building, Continuing Education.

New online Transfer Credit Wizard available

The UW-Eau Claire Admissions Office and Learning and Technology Services have developed a new way to look up transfer equivalencies. The Transfer Credit Wizard shows equivalencies that were entered by the UW-Eau Claire Admissions Office into CampS. (Note: Users must be logged off of CampS to view this public link.) The Transfer Credit Wizard also can be accessed through the Admissions website by clicking on Transfer Students and then Transfer Credit Wizard or through CampS by clicking on Main Menu, Self Service and then Transfer Credit Wizard.

Student nominations sought for outdoor leadership retreat

EAC logoThe UW-Eau Claire Environmental Adventure Center is sponsoring a free outdoor leadership retreat for UW-Eau Claire students June 11-15 at Devil's Lake State Park in Baraboo. Faculty and staff are invited to nominate freshman or sophomore students with experience in outdoor activities such as canoeing, white water rafting, backpacking, rock climbing or others. Spring/summer steam, electrical outages announced

lightbulbThe spring 2012 steam outage is planned for 6 p.m. May 19 through 4 p.m. May 29. As a result, no potable hot water will be available on campus except in Chancellors, Thomas and Murray halls, all hall directors' apartments, Zorn Arena, Brewer Hall, Human Sciences and Services Building, McIntyre Library, Nursing Building, Crest Wellness Center, Ade Olson addition, Haas Fine Arts Center (isolated areas) and Phillips Hall.

This summer's planned electrical outage will occur on June 9. The outage will last for approximately eight hours beginning at 7 a.m. The following buildings will be affected: Haas Fine Arts Center, Human Sciences and Services Building, Maintenance and Central Stores Building and the Heating Plant. All of the affected buildings have emergency generator power except the Maintenance and Central Stores Building.

These annually-occurring utility outages allow for preventive maintenance and repairs that help prevent unplanned emergency outages due to breakdowns. For more information, contact Terry Classen at classetl@uwec.edu or 715-836-5278.
